signs of the times

i went to the occupy vegas march yesterday. it was well attended, orderly, peaceful, contained, and not much noticed in the national press. at least, not that i could find. in a town full of transients, i see it as a minor miracle that people showed up.

we marched up and down the fremont street experience, a closed area full of casinos, shops, and general vegas oddness. the crowd was paced by two mounted (yes, on horses) metro police officers.

the crowd was highly diverse, in age, political leaning, and opinion.
here's some of what i saw.

folks in wheelchairs

 dogs

 kids, of all ages

 folks my age

activists in training

there will be more photos when i can stand to sit in front of the computer for a while again.

  1. I feel proud when I see people all over participating in what is a crucial part of our country's process: peaceful protest.

  2. Momentum grows each day!

WV - redly, the momentum grows redly during Red October!

  3. jeannette-thank you for dropping in. i feel strongly the peaceful aspect of protest needs to be emphasized and continuously reiterated. it is violence, in all its manifestations that has brought us to where we are now. it won't get us out of this.

okatb-yes, it does, thankfully! i'm deeply happy that people are waking up to the fact that they are not victims, that they have power in this process.

  4. Here's a protest sign that may reverberate with Las Vegasites:

"WALL STREET: STOP GAMBLING WITH OUR FUTURES"

  5. kirk-one of the photos i have yet to put up says "wall street has a gambling problem."
and we're working off their losses.

  6. Seriously, I do hope everyone's right and some good comes out of all this. I'm delighted it's happening, but can't quite see, politically, where it's all going to lead to.

  7. kirk-i don't see where it's going yet, either. this is in its infancy, and there's lots to be clarified in terms of direction and agenda. for now, tho, getting people out of a victim mentality and into the streets is a damn good start. as hannibal said about crossing the alps, "we will either find a way or make one."
