in the fog

The Breathing

An absolute
patience.
Trees stand
up to their knees in
fog. The fog
slowly flows
uphill.
White
cobwebs, the grass
leaning where deer
have looked for apples.
The woods
from brook to where
the top of the hill looks
over the fog, send up
not one bird.
So absolute, it is
no other than
happiness itself, a breathing
too quiet to hear.

Denise Levertov

  1. Very nice imagery. The poem plays perfectly off the photo which reminds me of cliffs along the ocean.

  2. What are we looking at here? The colors are of the desert; the texture looks like that of fungus. You have me stumped.

  3. tag-your "going coastal" series has been reminding me of the time i lived in san fran. as the line from the book goes, "it was the best of times, it was the worst of times." i did love the fog there.

tregina-aha! i've puzzled the audience! you know those beautiful roses that once known as the badger, aka jim, has been putting up? well, this is a dead one, propped up against the side of a bowl. i too, had the fungus thought.

  4. Well! You have taken photographing the transition of blossoms from the drooping, discoloration and dessication of petals even further toward the eventual state of dust..... How about you keep that dead one in place for another couple of weeks and show us that? I am rapt.

  5. tregina-well, that pretty much depends on how long jim keeps that bloom around. hmm, how to photograph dust...

  6. Looks like something out of Star Trek.

  7. I can't think of a specific episode, but they seemedto transport to a lot of planets with low level fog in the original series. Maybe "The City of the Edge of Forever," the one where Captain Kirk has to let Joan Collins get killed or else Hitler wins WWII. I seem to remember that planet being kind of foggy. Maybe if that dead rose had a hole cut through it, it would look like the time machine that Kirk, Spock, and McCoy jump through.
